Description:
Set during World War II, the film follows Bruno, the young son of a high-ranking German officer, whose family relocates to a remote countryside home near a mysterious fenced compound. Isolated and curious, Bruno begins exploring his surroundings and soon encounters Shmuel, a boy his own age who lives on the other side of the fence, dressed in what Bruno believes to be “striped pyjamas.”
Despite the barrier separating them, the two boys form an innocent friendship, meeting regularly and sharing stories of their vastly different lives. Bruno, sheltered from the reality of the war and unaware of the true nature of the camp, struggles to understand why Shmuel cannot leave or why the people beyond the fence seem so different.
As their bond grows stronger, Bruno becomes increasingly determined to help his friend, even as the tension surrounding the camp intensifies. Meanwhile, his family is drawn deeper into the moral and emotional conflicts of the time, with his mother beginning to question the reality of her husband’s role and the environment they are living in.
Told through the perspective of childhood innocence, the film presents a deeply moving and tragic exploration of friendship, ignorance, and the devastating impact of hatred and war. Its quiet storytelling and emotional weight build toward a powerful and unforgettable conclusion.
